Gainesville’s Community F.I.R.S.T. initiative—standing for Facilitative, Innovative, Responsive, Supportive, Timely—has been making significant strides in enhancing our neighborhoods. This program brings city services directly to residents, addressing local concerns and fostering trust between the community and city officials.
Initially launched in the Porters Quarters neighborhood, Community F.I.R.S.T. quickly demonstrated its effectiveness. The Public Works Department repaired sidewalks, improved drainage, and ensured streetlights were functioning properly. Speed limit signs were relocated to reduce speeding, showcasing the city’s commitment to responsive problem-solving.
Building on this success, the initiative expanded to include the Phoenix, Greater Duval, Sugar Hill, Pineridge, University Park, and Pleasant Street neighborhoods. Regular meetings between community representatives and city liaisons have led to swift responses to various issues, from infrastructure repairs to public safety enhancements.
Community F.I.R.S.T. also hosts pop-up service fairs, bringing resources like financial assistance, housing support, and public safety information directly into neighborhoods. These events aim to make city services more accessible and transparent, meeting residents where they are.
City Manager Cynthia W. Curry emphasized the program’s goal: “Community F.I.R.S.T. is about building trust—showing neighbors that the city hears them, and that we act quickly on issues they raise.” Mayor Harvey L. Ward added, “This isn’t a one-time outreach. It’s an ongoing relationship. Neighbors are telling us what matters most, and the city is responding with action and accountability.”
Residents can submit concerns through the myGNV app or website, attend in-person neighborhood meetings, or connect directly with city directors assigned to their areas. This initiative reflects Gainesville’s commitment to making city government more accessible, responsive, and community-focused.
